  • President's Report 2024

    SIDENT’S REPORT 9/24

Welcome to the 34rd AGM of Christchurch Avon, and what would be the 101st AGM of the Christchurch Club and the 50th AGM of the Avon

    club.

The key highlights of this year were once again picking up the ‘Spike’ for club of the year performances over the winter, the continuing

strength of our summer children’s section at Canterbury level and a top performing club at the South Island Colgates in Dunedin.

Key individual performances were placing at the 2023 NZ Cross Country Champs on the challenging course at Taupo were:- Kate Curie 3rd

    W18, Alex Kelliher 2nd M35, & John Gamblin 3rd M60 with 6 club members competing.

The NZ Road Relay Championships were held on a new course at Loburn due to the unsuitability of the Takahe to Akaroa course, with 6

teams entered and the M60 team winning with the M70 team second. Other teams were Senior Men A, Senior Men C grade, Senior women,

    Junior men A & B, and M60 - B

Over the summer track season’s NZ championship events, where 5 of our athletes participated, we had fine performances from our women’s

side with Samamtha Lascelles 3rd 800m W20, 2nd 4x400m W20, Kate Currie 3rd 5000m W120, while not forgetting our men Leo de Monchy

2nd 3,000m B16, and together with Otto Church claiming a 2 nd in 4 x 400m. But perhaps the outstanding effort was to have an athlete from

our club win a tile in the Pole Vault where I have never seen a club member compete, well done Otto Church B16 PV.

We have made some progress on our strategic plan with a new updated senior’s singlet which makes you want to run fast and is definitely

21st century. We have also moved to take over the running of the Boulder Bay Classic from Sumner club and have been accepted by DOC

to hold the next 10 year concession.

I write this following piece as a review of the club after being President for the last 2 years and about to step down. In reviewing last years

report, I believe that was a fair assessment of the club. Our current strengths & weaknesses. However, this period we have seen our top two

male runners depart for other clubs due to social reasons, and we do not have a lot of club connection between individuals to create that

bond of being a member of this club. DGRS have initiated club training nights and this looks enticing! Most of the club executive are club

captains busy in their roles and so new initiatives are difficult to get off the ground. The bulk of our experience is now working at Athletics

Canterbury level. I have always been a firm believer if you are not changing then you are going backwards, and thus I always like seeing

new elements being added to the club and improvements on existing positions to help our members. I have come to the realisation that we

need more help to do this, and that we need to have small ‘projects’ where people can volunteer to help for the short period of these

projects. So that is YOU if you are reading this and not holding an executive position.

Perhaps a few bright moments of my term are the introduction of ‘Presidents Comment’ in order to let club members know of the activities of

the executive and let the wider club know what each is doing. However, I did not get any volunteers to recreate a regular newsletter. The

other being the introduction of a Women’s Senior Club Captain, and it is extremely satisfying to see a senior women’s team being sent away

to the NZ Road Relay Championships in 2 weeks’ time. This may well be a first for the club. The taking over of Boulder Bay Classic has

happened because we see the potential to run events, mainly aimed at non registered runners to gain a profit for the club, with funds used to

aid our members compete at national and world point scoring events. Again we can all help in making this a unique event.

For the remainder of the year, I wish you good running.

    President

  • 2024 Winter Club Captain's Report

    CHAV Seniors Winter report 2024

This season seems to have flown by and yet there is still a lot to come………

The club has 30 members attending the National Road Relays in Taupo, we host the Boulder Bay Classic back on the original Godley Head course before the National Road Championships just down the road in Timaru, it’s all go.

My early season was interrupted by a trip to see family in the UK and I would like to thank Dave Catherwood for more than adequately taking my place and for his enthusiasm and energy through out the season.  Talking of energy and enthusiasm Lahana Reeves joins Dave as someone who has made a real difference to the club this year, I have been impressed with their regular supply of ideas and actions to follow – lessons for all!  Thank you both.

The club continues to remain a strong presence at local events although, it has to be said, the lack of competitors from other centres has exaggerated our presence.  I have heard several senior persons in the club community raising the possibility of the demise of our local clubs and events………….

Personally I don’t think this likely in the immediate future but I imagine changes will have to occur.  Seeing clubs and Athletics Canterbury putting on regular events with considerable effort and expense is not sustainable, especially when the small number of regular volunteers doing all the mahi are mostly past retirement age.

We have lost senior runners to other clubs as happens every year but we have gained others and the women’s section is now looking far healthier than the last few years bringing a different (welcome) vibe to the club and reduces the grey or no hair ratio!!

A few highlights from the season

    • Kate Currie held a successful pub quiz fundraiser for her trip to World School Cross Country Championship in Kenya placing 32nd.

    • Friday Night Lights event (which I missed) sounded like a great innovation and a lot of fun, hopefully this will become a feature in the calendar.

    • Daniel Reese Memorial Hagley relays also had a new medley format, again this proved popular.

    • Canterbury Cross Country Champs – W20 1st Kate Currie, 3rd Lucy Jurke, MW55 Wendy Richards 3rd, MW65 Sue Johnson 1st, MM40 1st Alex Kelliher, MM50 3rd Craig Eustace, MM60 2nd Neil Gilmour, MM65 1st Peter Richards, 2nd Dave Tyrell, 3rd Frank Walsh, MM70 1st Rodger Ward, 3rd Nick Braithwaite, MM75 1st Bruce Dyer.

    • CHAV held the Kennett Cup incorporating the Canterbury short cross-country championships a successful event but with relatively low turn out.

    • Club cross country and road championships – both included well attended, garrulous post event debriefs.

    • Governor’s Bay to Lyttleton including Canterbury 10km road championships.  This race did have a good turnout boosted by some community runners.  Great conditions and good catch up after the race.  MU20 2nd Tayne Patel, MM50 2nd Ben Clark, MM55 3rd Paul Clark, MM60 1st Richard Seigne, 2nd Richie Merrett, 3rd Neil Gilmour, MM65 1st Peter Richards, 3rd Frank Walsh,  MM70 1st Rodger Ward, 2nd Nick Braithwaite MW50 1st Wendy Richards, WM65 1st Sue Johnson.  In addition Caleb Radcliffe, Harry Huang and Leo De Monchy also put in good performances for their ages.

    • Loburn 39 SM 2nd place- Tayne Patel Tommy Richards Luke Mitchell Flynn Register Corban Straker Tram O'Callaghan.  SW 3rd Lahana Reeves Wendy Richards Mairi Law Sue Johnson Kate Currie Jessie Nimot (big thanks to Jessie who stepped in at the last minute to run and so got the team a medal).  MM60 1st Richard Seigne Rob Holland Frank Walsh John Gamblin Pete Richards Rodger Ward.

    • Sunday and Thursday runs continue with refreshments afterwards, although not as regularly on Thursday the Volstead has been missing out.

    • Hagley park – always something or someone to see - the cherry blossoms are epic at the moment.

There’s lots to come, keep enjoying your running and please help run the club as well it needs you!

    Richard Seigne

    Winter Club Captain

  • Summer Junior Club Captain's report

Chav Junior Summer Club Captain’s report- 2022 -2023 season

Numbers in the summer children’s section were much the same as always –around the 200 mark. The only place where we saw a drop was in the Kiwisport Group of 5/6yr olds.

Everyone who wanted to join was accommodated into the club.

Club nights followed the usual format weekly –with the children doing 4 events each night and working towards achieving their 5 star awards.

New club records were set by  athletes:

Maisie Saili  -6yr Girls -Discus 12m68               Elena Ash -9yr Girls 60m Hurdles -12.8

Isaac Young -11yr Boys 70m Hurdles -12.6     Anna Gillett -14yr Girls HJ -1m65 and LJ -5m22

    Jack Ferguson -10yr Boys 60m -8.37, 100m -13.31 and 200m -27.7

Congratulations to those 5 athletes !

Our club champs in February was well attended and there was fierce competition in some age groups! A nice mix of Saturday athletes and Club athletes won their age groups this season.

At our Annual Prize –Giving in March  I was unfortunately too sick to attend and a massive thanks must go to Debbie for stepping in at the very last minute and doing an amazing job of running the evening!

The top awards were presented to :

Best Under 14 athlete –Lucas Stevens

“May Paterson Memorial Trophy” for effort at Inter Club –Annabelle Magrath

“Carolin Yin Memorial Trophy” -Milan Laifa

“Paul Mcleod Memorial Trophy” -Vinnie Gardiner

Most Improved Athlete -Senior -Vern Toaolalmai -Holden    Junior -Tessa Sorenson

A big thank you here to all our event chiefs, skills coaches and roster ladies who work hard to make club nights a big success. Thnak you also to the many parent-hepers who willingly take their turn on the duty roster.

    Inter Club

We had a very large group of almost 100 athletes who signed up to compete at Inter Club on Saturday mornings! There is no doubt that those who compete regularly on Saturdays- improve faster in their athletic events through regular competition and the excellent quality coaching they receive on Monday nights.

Chav had 3 Canterbury Champions this season:

Mckenna John (9), Annabel Magrath( 10) Canterbury Champs and Lucas Stevens (14)

Chav won the trophy for the most points scored at Canterbury Champs.

We continue to have a close relationship with the OBU Senior club. Our Senior Coaching Squad are fortunate enough to be able to use their grounds /equipment for training and many of our summer coaches are Senior athletes at OBU.

Thnak –you to all the coaches who have helped our athletes at Junior /Senior squad nights, at Tuesday middle –distance training and at our Winter training programme in the off-season. Without you  -there is no doubt our athletes would not have made such big improvements and had so much success.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the members of my Junior Committee –who put in hours of work behind the scene  - Debbie, Steph, Jillian, Kylie, Tracey, Bryony, Pip. In particular –a massive thanks to Debbie and Paul Gillett who have finished up their association with the children’s section of the club -their help has been invaluable in so many ways over the past few seasons. Well -that is to say Paul is almost finished!! We are so excited to announce that Paul has been persuaded to carry on in his HJ role at club nights again for another season!!! This is such good news for our Chav children!

Thanks also to Paul Gillett, Graeme Clark and Gary Prest and their band of helpers for marking out the track for the athletes for us each season.

Finally –thank-you to the Chav children who are a well –behaved, enthusiastic, hard –working group of youngsters. You were a pleasure to work with and I took great pride in watching as each one of you grew in confidence and developed your athletic talents over the season. I encourage you all to work hard, play fair and always strive to “Be the very best you can be” in your athletic events and look forward to seeing you all again for another season in October at the Chav Children’s section of the club.

  • Junior Winter Club Captain's Report:

    (photos unfortunately didn't transfer)

Junior Winter Club Captain’s Report 2024

Welcome to the Junior Winter Club Captain’s Report for 2024. We seem to have flown through the season this year,

or perhaps that’s just my perspective after taking a mid-winter holiday. I’d like to acknowledge and thank those who

stepped forward in my absence to keep the CHAV show on the road. Sue Johnson enthusiastically volunteered to

keep the Saturday event schedule on track and was very ably supported by John Palmer, Frank Walsh, Richard

Seigne, Lahana Reeves and Kate Currie at the various weekend events. Nobody even knew I was gone!

I hope you have all gained something from your season of winter running. I hope enjoyment, but perhaps it was

improvement, new friends, more knowledge, more motivation, more determination, or maybe all of that.

Christchurch Avon has once again dominated large parts of the winter interclub season. We have the largest

number of runners and relay teams, and we appear to have won the Club of the Year trophy for a seventh

consecutive year equalling our previous best streak of seven consecutive years in the competition’s 15-year history.

If you do the math, that’s 14 wins in 15 years. I hear that other clubs complain about our dominance in this

competition, but I think it shows our depth across the age grades and how we develop our athletes.

As I sit reflecting and basking in that glow of success, it begs the question, why have we been so successful? On

more than one occasion I’ve heard people observe that Christchurch Avon runners seem to improve much more

than runners at other clubs. It’s no secret that people who run more regularly improve more (particularly if they do

the right kind of training). I think the answer is that simple. Christchurch Avon offers more opportunity to run more

regularly! I don’t know what training groups other clubs have, but ours continue to be popular and well attended.

And I believe that we are the only club to offer Saturday events every week during the season. That’s a perfect segway into thanking those wonderful coaches we have organising our training groups. I know that

John Palmer, Sue Johnson, John Ingles, Grant Straker, Lizzi Corbin and I are very proud of what you have achieved

and the progress that you’ve made. We are equally proud of them and the fantastic contribution they make to our

club. A MASSIVE thanks to you all, and PLEASE come back again next year (no pressure).

Whilst I’m handing out THANKS, I’d also like to thank everyone who volunteered or agreed to help with our Saturday

events. Setting up courses and taking them down, marshalling, timing, recording, starting etc. Your help is GREATLY

    appreciated.

I’d also like to acknowledge Shannon Radcliffe and Richard Hudson for the wonderful photos they take and post to

the Christchurch Avon Running Facebook page. I’ve lifted a small selection to make this report far more colourful

and interesting (a picture paints a thousand words).

I will take this opportunity to recognise and celebrate our highest achievers this season but add the reminder that all

of you have the potential to be high achievers in the future if you want to be. Many of New Zealand’s top

performing athletes didn’t become high achievers until adulthood, but continuing to develop and improve when you

are young is part of that pathway.

In last year’s report I mentioned the success that Kate Currie had enjoyed and noted her development through the

Christchurch Avon junior section. Kate has continued her success in 2024 most notably as a NZ Secondary Schools

representative competing in Australia and Kenya this season.Leo de Monchy placed third in the NZ U16 Cross Country championship race in

Napier and won both the U16 and U18 grades in the recent Canterbury Road

Champs. Leo was also second behind Daniel Wordsworth in the Canterbury U16

Short Course Cross Country. Daniel winning both Canterbury U16 cross country

races. These two along with Otto Church all finished in the top 10 of the NZ

Secondary Schools junior boy’s cross country race.

Jacob Radcliffe won all of his U14 age group races this season with victories in

the Canterbury cross country, Canterbury short course cross country, Canterbury

    road and NZ cross country.

Kobe Ford has also taken a clean sweep of Canterbury titles in the U12 boys’

grade with gold medals at the Canterbury cross country, Canterbury short course

cross country, and Canterbury Road Champs.

Momoka Hudson won both the Canterbury cross country titles in the U12 girls’

    grade.

Everyone had the opportunity to be a high achiever in our Points Series

competition and I congratulate this years’ medallists on their commitment to our

club events and their ability to outperform the handicapper’s expectations. One of my goals for next season is to

build on this and introduce more awards that recognise commitment and improvement because developing

champion qualities is more important than developing champions.

Enjoy your summer and keep active. Keep up some regular running if you can. The fitness you gain from running

will benefit you in any summer activity you’re involved with and will give you a head start towards being an

improved runner in the next winter season.

    Craig Eustace

    Junior Winter Club Captain
